Foyer Chair
This chair project was part of class where I had to design and build my own piece of furniture.
During this process, I learned the steps of ideation and some workshop skills
My initial plan of the chair was to create a lounge chair, but that plan later changed into a chair meant for the foyer. To make my chair functional, I kept the seat close to the ground to allow the user to easily put on or take off their shoes. The pieces of the chair were made through CNC cutting, and I assembled them together through mortise and tenon.
Here are some initial design concepts for the chair. The 2nd image contains the original sketch for the Foyer Chair, where I originally imagined the chair to be one whole, solid piece. Later on, I changed my mind and simplified the design to just mortise and tenon. This made it so assembling the chair would be easier and easier to plan out.
In the 1st image is a curve that I created in Rhino. This shape is what I ultimately decided to use as my chair's frame.
After extruding out my curve into a 3D design, I began to think of where I would put the beams of the chair. During the process, I came up with 3 different designs. I was also anticipating to create my own padding for the chair, which is why the 2nd image has the pillows. However, I never got around to making the pillows, but that image is probably what they would turn out to be. In the end, I eventually decided to use the rightmost chair, the one with 5 bars on the back, as my final product.
