Horse Shelf
For the Horse Shelf I wanted to create a place where one could store many things. For example, the first level features 4 wooden bars, which can be used to store larger objects or can hold trays. On the second level, it features a solid board that can hold miscellaneous items such as plants or candles. I also created 2 different versions, one with the horse head and the other without it. For the one with the head, it has a third level where the horse's eyes act as a bar to hang clothes or towels.
The initial planning for the shelf came from me sketching around various shapes, and I eventually decided to try designing a shelf. At first, the shelf didn't have any connection to the horse, but as I was modeling out it reminded me of a past work that I did (but never finished, the Horse Chair). I noticed that there was a pair of legs and neck that the shelf appeared to have, and all I had to add on was the horse's head.
In Rhino, I drew out the shape of my drawing, and I spent some time playing the the shape and figuring out what looked good and what didn't. One issue that I encountered was that the neck section of the shelf wasn't thick enough, and instead was too thin to support the addition of a shelf. Here I also planned out what my shelf levels would look like, where at first I did a solid piece for the first level, but later changed it to beams.
Here are some extruded models of the shelf. In the first image I was looking to see if the dimensions seemed alright, in which it can be seen that I changed the width of the legs and neck several times. The second image showcases the Horse Shelf before rendering them.
This is a picture of what the Horse Shelf would look like in action. I placed some random clutter and imagined how I could be using this piece.
